- Professional Mountain Guiding in Scotland's Far North

King Mountaineering offers a wide range of skills courses. Whether you are a novice seeking basic navigation tuition, an experienced hillwalker looking to brush up on your skills, or someone preparing for an assessment, we can help prepare you with the skills you need for making the most of your adventures in the Scottish mountains.

Courses offered include:

  • Navigation (basic and advanced)
  • Hill Skills
  • Rock Climbing

In Scotland’s far north we have a lot of open space. There are vast areas of hill country, with mountains, moorland, lochans and rivers, presenting a very complex topography. This is the perfect location to learn this essential hill skill!

We aim to equip you with all the skills necessary to navigate correctly and efficiently, from getting orientated and setting the map, to taking bearings and following them, using contours and relocating yourself in bad visibility. We can run courses introducing the basics of navigation for those starting out, or offer a more advanced session that extends your current skills.

So, if you would like to organise navigation training for a group or fine-tune some specific aspects of your own navigation, please get in touch and we can discuss your goals.

Our Hill Skills courses are designed to give you the skills you need to get out and experience the summer mountains of the Scottish Highlands on your own. Each Hill Skills course includes a day out walking in the Scottish Highlands, but with a particular focus on developing useful skills for planning your own future trips and expeditions. Depending on what you would like to focus on and your previous hillwalking experience we can look at a range of aspects of summer hillwalking, including:

  • Planning
  • Weather
  • Equipment
  • Route Finding
  • Hazards
  • Emergency Procedures
  • Outdoor Access Code in practice

Rock climbing is a exhilarating and rewarding way to spend a day in the outdoors.

Our rock climbing courses will set you up with the basic skills you need to get started in climbing. Our sessions take place at single pitch venues* in a variety scenic locations, giving you the chance to get experience on the rock, climbing fun routes, learning new skills and hanging out in some stunning places.

We can also offer bespoke climbing sessions for groups or provide sessions at indoor climbing venues.  If you are interested please get in touch to discuss.
