Friday 3rd February 2017 – Trekker Test!
It was my first day out with the Trekker today. I took it for a wee wander up Glen Calvie near Alladale Estate in Easter Ross. The purpose of the walk was to complete a Trekker test. This gave me a chance to work out how the system works and get a feel for what it will be like carrying it.
So far, so good!
Starting from the parking area near Glencalvie Lodge, I walked about 2 miles up the glen in glorious spring-like conditions recording some imagery, then turned it off and walked back. The sun felt warm and in the shelter of the lower glen it really didn’t feel much like winter. Carn Chuinneag, a Corbett at the head of the glen, is pretty much clear of snow. The conditions did give me a chance to appreciate the glen at its best though. The native woodlands with tumbling river are stunning and the whole area seems to be bursting with wildlife.
The Trekker certainly is a heavy load. There could be room for making it fit my back a bit better, but all in all it was quite comfy. The return walk was an easier carry when I had the wind behind me, effectively blowing me back to the car. It really isn’t the most aerodynamic bit of kit!
I was stopped a couple of times by curious parties wondering what I was doing and what I was carrying on my back. I wonder how many similar conversations I will be having in the coming few weeks!
